Inspired by Paul Graham’s Seminal A1 photographs, a photographer called Sam Mellish has been traveling the roads of East Anglia photographing the roadside caffs and food vans parked in lay-bys. Below the line design and food choices untouched by any national chains or any notions of slickness. It’s going into the Babylon Gallery in Ely [...]

Hiding from the weather
November 14th, 2009 1 Comment
I dreamed of sailing last night – the gale raged around the house all night and still hasn’t blown itself out. Rain is battering the windows and the bright yellow leaves of my cherry tree are all over the garden. I just saw three young persons with enormous rucksacks trudge wearily past – not the [...]

Foraging in the hedgerows – Hips and Haws
October 11th, 2009 1 Comment
Spending a too-short weekend at home before going back to the city, loving the crisp autumn weather. I’ve spent as much time outside as possible, preparing the garden for winter, painting the arch that leads to the vegetable garden and going for a long walk today. The hedgerows are groaning under berries this year – [...]

Local food in Cambridge
June 18th, 2009 No Comments
Origin8 in Cambridge is a deli and cafe with a mission to to stock only food and drink produced in East Anglia, covering about the same area as this blog. They’ve been very energetic in their sourcing and despite the eyewateringly trendy name it’s a joy to visit. I stopped in and was struck by [...]

Seasonal food, tented

Kate at All Things Considered points out that tonight is the launch night of an intriguing restaurant on the Norfolk coast that operates in a yurt. Their pitch is “simple, taste-driven food, prepared and served by a passionate bunch”. The restaurant is situated by a farm in the village of Thornham and they’ll be using [...]

A nice cup of tea
May 3rd, 2009 2 Comments
All bank holiday trips should be accompanied by tea, preferably properly made and served without styrofoam. Luckily, there is an organisation called the Tea Council, whose remit is to find and classify those who sell really good cups of tea, and they have recently announced their 2009 Awards of Excellence. As they have only made [...]

Foraging in the hedgerows – spring
March 29th, 2009 No Comments
Today I went foraging in the woods with friends for the fresh green tops of stinging nettles which are just coming into growth to make nettle and ginger beer. I can’t yet vouch for the flavour – it takes about 7 days to be ready to drink, so watch this space.
Even if it turns out [...]

Full of festivals
March 5th, 2009 1 Comment
It struck me today that Cambridge, in particular, overflows with festivals. Whatever your hyperspecialised desire, there is probably a festival that will include it in this town. I just got an email from the Food and Drink festival about their fundraising quiz, where you go and drink wine and eat cheese and try and answer [...]

Forage in the hedgerows
October 15th, 2008 1 Comment
After the first hard frost it is sloe picking time. They grow on blackthorns – easy to spot because they grow the same size as hawthorns but with oval leaves and really quite ferociously long thorns. They aren’t as ubiquitous as hawthorns, but most country walks in East Anglia are likely to throw up several.
